What Parents Can Do During the Lag: Build a Future‑Ready Portfolio

The Education system will take between 5-10 years to try and catch up to the massive changes underway today. You can’t change the system. But you can build around it.

Here’s how.

1. Supplement the skills the system isn’t teaching yet

  • Cognitive Flexibility Dual‑language programs, music, coding, improvisation, debate.

  • Comfort With Ambiguity Project‑based learning, inquiry‑based science, open‑ended art.

  • Sense‑Making & Judgment Estimation games, logic puzzles, real‑world decision‑making.

  • Cross‑Cultural Competence Language exposure, cultural events, travel, diverse peer groups.

  • Resilience & Productive Struggle Sports, music practice, chess, maker projects.

These are the skills AI cannot replace — and the ones the system cannot yet teach at scale.

2. Use school for what it can do well right now

Schools are still strong at:

  • foundational literacy

  • foundational math

  • social belonging

  • routine

  • exposure to diverse peers

  • access to services (GT, SPED, counseling)

Let school handle the basics. Where they can't, let home handle the future.

3. Choose schools based on the behaviors they require daily

Instead of asking:

“Is this a good school?”

Ask:

“What does this environment train my child to do every day?”

Do they practice:

  • explaining their thinking?

  • navigating confusion?

  • collaborating across difference?

  • switching cognitive modes?

  • learning non‑linearly?

These behaviors matter more than CMAS scores.

4. Build a “portfolio” instead of relying on one school

Your child’s education should come from:

  • School (core academics + belonging)

  • Home (future‑ready skills + cognitive flexibility)

  • Community (sports, arts, language, culture)

  • Experiences (travel, projects, real‑world problem‑solving)

One school cannot do it all. A portfolio can.

5. Get Strategic Support (If You Want It)

Most parents are trying to navigate:

  • outdated standards

  • confusing DPS choice systems

  • GT pathways

  • dual‑language options

  • future‑ready skill gaps

  • school‑to‑home alignment

This is exactly the gap my consultancy fills.

I help families:

  • evaluate schools through a future‑ready lens

  • build a supplemental plan that matches their child’s strengths

  • navigate DPS choice, GT, dual‑language, and transitions

  • create a portfolio that ensures their child graduates with the right era’s skills

I am accepting new families in the 2026 Winter Season for School Choice and other school strategies. Learn more here.
